Long Flight Essentials
Flying is not the most exciting part of your vacation. In fact, it is usually the worst. If you have never been on a long flight, don’t worry. Below are a few essentials for long-haul flights that will hopeful help better your experience.
Comfortable Clothes
Probably the most important thing when flying is wearing comfortable clothes. There is nothing worse than being in a tiny seat for 10 hours with jeans on that are cutting into you. My go-to’s for a long flight are Lululemon yoga pants, a lightweight t-shirt, a cute zip-up sweatshirt and Nikes. Tip- wear layers. It often gets pretty chilly on long flights, especially when they dim the lights to sleep. Bring a sweater even if warm weather awaits you at your destination.
Headphones & Entertainment
If you are like me, sleeping on a plane does not come easy. So, a must have on a long flight is headphones. A lot of long-haul planes have personal tv’s with preloaded movies. They provide headphones but they usually do not work well or they cost money. However, not all long-haul planes have tv’s, especially older planes. Always have a backup prepared like an iPad or music loaded on your phone. You can use both in the air on airplane mode. Magazines and books are also a great way to pass the time. I always pack a fun book and grab a couple magazines at the newsstand while waiting for my flight.
Snacks
Always a good idea. Let’s be honest, sometimes in-flight food is not your jam. Or in some cases, it is not provided in your ticket cost and very expensive to purchase on board. Pack some snacks! Protein bars, nuts and dried fruit are great options. They will fill you up and if you don’t eat them on the plane, you can save them for one of your outings later in your trip.
A Few Cosmetics
Be ready for adventure as soon as you land. Most likely, it’s been more than 12 hours since you washed your face or brushed your hair. Wipe off all that grease with a face wipe and apply a little powder and mascara for a fresh look. Run the brush through your hair and throw it in a messy bun. If you are feeling really adventurous and want to head to the bathroom really quick before landing, pack a toothbrush and travel size toothpaste.
Other Essentials
Another item important to your comfort is a neck pillow. It’s hard to get comfy in those seats and a neck pillow definitely helps. I love my memory foam pillow, under $15 on Amazon. Keep your passport and a pen with you (don’t put it in overhead compartment). For international flights, you usually have to fill out a form or two before you land. It also helps to have your hotel information handy since this is usually required on one of the forms.
One Last Thing
Pack your guidebooks in your carry-on! Start researching what you want to do first and make a priority list. It is a great use of your time and you will be so pumped to get started by the time you land.
Rules to live by- Be comfortable, bring plenty of entertainment and snacks, and try to get some sleep. Bon voyage!
